Maria Porro’s Forecast For Salone Del Mobile 2023
The Return Of Euroluce
Nowadays, lighting is more than just illuminated objects or light bodies; it encompasses technology, architecture, and interaction. Salone Del Mobile aims to showcase this through an interdisciplinary approach. Along with a great deal of design, including that produced by companies, there will be science, art, graphic design, photography, literature, and architecture – essentially all the different facets of design. To achieve this, they have created a “city of light” with public areas and large exhibitions curated by a diverse group of individuals, including architects, curators, and interior and lighting designers. The primary goal is to focus on the future while still honoring the event’s origins.
The visitor experience is at the heart of the changes made to Euroluce. The new layout is designed to be more organic and simpler, with a focus on ensuring that everything is visible and easy to navigate. The public space will be curated by Formafantasma, while Beppe Finessi will oversee all cultural content. Lombardini22 has collaborated with the organizers to develop a new exhibition layout using software that maximizes the use of the trade fair spaces, ensuring visitors a fresh and optimal experience.

The Year Of Sustainability
In pursuit of sustainable design practices, Salone Del Mobile collaborated with Supersalone to research materials and construction techniques for stands. Last year, the Salone made history as the first trade fair to join the UN Global Compact. This year, it aims to acquire the ISO 20121 certification, which requires a set of guidelines for reducing the environmental impact of stands. As a federation and as Assarredo, they support companies in their transition towards eco-friendliness, providing practical assistance in sourcing sustainable materials and funding.
Maria Porro says “We have to be very active as regards market penetration, and so the issue of internationalization is crucial.” In the current situation, market differentiation plays a crucial role. The challenges with the supply of raw materials and components have highlighted the importance of short supply chains, especially in a sector that is still primarily focused on manufacturing. Additionally, supporting and promoting the growth and development of productive entities is a major challenge. Unfortunately, in the case of small-scale industry and craftsmanship, there is often a lack of generational transfer, making training essential. For instance, while the fashion industry has experts in electrotechnical and textile specialties, there is a lack of expertise in furnishing. The absence of specialized schools for such an important sector is a concern. Salone Del Mobile is therefore organizing working groups at a national level to assist companies and meet the increasing demand despite limited supply.

The platform is also a year-round exhibition space for companies to display their products, create original content, and collaborate with both national and international publications, making it an important platform for design.
